Abstract

Aim: Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) is the lateral and horizontal deformity of the columna vertebralis which occurs idiopathically in adolescence ages. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between the severity of scoliosis and the perception of scoliosis quality of life, pain and depression level in patients with AIS. Method: Sixty-nine adolescent AIS patients aged between 10-18 years were included in this study. The cases’ scoliosis severity was determined by Cobb method, scoliosis perception by Walter-Reed Visual Assessment Scale (WRVAS), pain assessment Visual Analog Scale, quality of life Scoliosis Research Society-22 (SRS-22) questionnaire and depression level Children’s Depression Scale (CDS) was determined. Data obtained from individuals were analysed by Spearman test. Results: The mean age of the patients included in the study was 14 ± 2,67; Cobb angles were 21,08±4,11; WRVAS results were 12,62±4,35; CDS results were 10,58±5,43; SRS-22 results were found to be 3,47±0,18. There was a statistically significant relationship between cobb angle and scoliosis perception (p < 0.05), Cobb angle and depression level (p < 0.05), Cobb angle and quality of life (p < 0.05) scores. Conclusion: Generally, correction of vertebral alignment is focused on in the treatment of AIS. However, it was found in this study that AIS affects vertebral alignment as well as quality of life, psychological state and perceived body alignment. Improvement of these parameters should also be considered in the treatments of AIS.
